Prachyanat Research Laboratory (The Lab)

“Prachyanat Research Laboratory” has been established as a theatre research and innovation centre as a wing of Prachyanat Theatre based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The official launching date of this website has been set to 21st February, commemorating the 27th birth anniversary of Prachyanat theatre. As an integral part of this initiative, Prachyanat Lab shall bring out a fully English Language International Journal, tentatively titled "The Lab Theatre Journal." Application for ISSN Certificate will be duly made. "The Lab Theatre Journal" will also apply for DOI and DOAJ after its first online publication. 

Introduction:

Theatre and performing arts serve as powerful mediums for cultural expression, social commentary, and community engagement. Recognizing the significance of these art forms, we have initiated the establishment of a Prachyanat Research Laboratory or the Lab in short, in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The following section outlines the goals, activities, and vision for the Lab, aiming to enrich the cultural landscape and scholarly discourse surrounding theatre and performing arts in Bangladesh and beyond.

Goals:

1. Cultural Preservation and Promotion: Documenting and preserving traditional and contemporary forms of theatre and performing arts in Bangladesh. Promoting cultural diversity and fostering appreciation for various theatrical traditions among local and international audiences.

2. Academic Excellence: Facilitating research and scholarship on theatre, performance studies, and related disciplines. Providing resources and support for scholars, researchers, and students interested in exploring theatre as a subject of study.

3. Community Engagement: Engaging with local communities to encourage participation in theatre and performing arts activities. Collaborating with artists, educators, and community organizations to create inclusive and accessible programming.

4. Innovation and Experimentation: Encouraging experimentation and innovation in theatrical practices, including interdisciplinary collaborations and new technologies. Supporting emerging artists and fostering a culture of creativity and exploration within the performing arts community.

Activities:

1. Research Initiatives: 

  • Prachyanat Lab will bring out an annual research journal in English on 1st February each year. The modalities of the journal will soon be announced. 
  • Conducting interdisciplinary research projects on various aspects of theatre, including history, theory, performance techniques, and socio-cultural impact. 
  • Publishing articles, books, and journals to contribute to the academic discourse on theatre and performing arts.

2. Educational Programs:

  • Offering stand-alone workshops for actors, directors, playwrights, and technicians to enhance their skills and knowledge.
  • Providing educational resources and curriculum development support for schools, colleges, and universities interested in integrating theatre into their academic programs.

3. Public Events and Performances:

  • Organizing public lectures, panel discussions, and symposiums featuring renowned scholars, artists, and practitioners from the global theatre community. 
  • Curating performances, festivals, and exhibitions showcasing diverse forms of theatrical expression, including traditional folk theatre, contemporary drama, puppetry, and experimental performance art.

 4. Archival and Documentation:

  • Establishing an archival repository to preserve and digitize materials related to Bangladeshi theatre history, including scripts, photographs, recordings, and ephemera. 
  • Creating online databases and digital platforms to facilitate access to archival resources for researchers, students, and the general public.

5. Community Outreach and Collaboration:

  • Partnering with local theatres, cultural organizations, schools, and community centers to develop outreach programs and initiatives that promote theatre appreciation and participation among diverse audiences. 
  • Collaborating with government agencies, NGOs, and international cultural institutions to advocate for the importance of theatre and performing arts in education, social development, and cultural diplomacy.

The establishment of Prachyanat Research Laboratory in Dhaka, Bangladesh represents a significant milestone in the promotion and preservation of the rich theatrical heritage of the region. Through its multifaceted activities and initiatives, the Centre seeks to foster academic excellence, cultural understanding, and community engagement within the vibrant landscape of Bangladeshi theatre and performing arts. By embracing innovation, collaboration, and inclusivity, we aspire to create a dynamic hub for creativity, scholarship, and dialogue that inspires future generations of artists, scholars, and cultural enthusiasts.
